Dear potential speaker and participant,

You have agreed to attend the Calotte Academy 2011 as a speaker, either tentatively or have already confirmed your participation. You are the most welcome to join us!

As you know the 2011 Academy will be organized in May 26 – June 1, 2011 inFinland, in Norway and in Russia. Its thematical focus is on stability, peace, tension and conflict, and the main theme is “From Circumpolar Stability toward Nordic Peace”.

The Calotte Academy is a travelling symposium, or ‘Northern Circus’ which takes a group of experts to travel through different destinations within the North Calotte in spring time. In 2011 the sites are Inari in Finland, Kirkenes in Norway and Apatity in Russia. There will be minimum two sessions in each location, plus possible informal workshops.

You are welcome to take the whole ‘package’ and travel through the whole route, or attend the session in one or two sites of the 2011 Academy.

Please, remember that if you will travel to Russia and attend the sessions in Apatity, you need a visa to Russia, which is rather urgent thing to do. And before that you need an official invitation from a Russian institute. We will assist you in applying a visa.

We do not know yet all the financing (as it is usually the case with this kind of ad hoc activity), but expect that we will manage to have funding for to cover your travelling within the region (from Rovaniemi to Inari, further to Kirkenes and Apatity, and back to Rovaniemi), most of accommodation in these locations, and coffees/teas and (most of) the meals.

We, however, much appreciate if your institution will be able and willing to cover these costs, or a part of them. We also expect that those, who will come from outside the North Calotte will cover their travelling to and from Rovaniemi / Kirkenes. For the PhD students we will apply some extra funding so that we would be able to cover all the costs within the region during the 2011 Academy.

Finally, we have some urgent requests for you:

First, those who have not, yet, confirmed her / his participation, yet, please do that asap. Also inform us, if you travel the whole round, and if not, what locations you are going to attend in;

Second, those who have not, yet, given the title of her / his presentation, please send it to me and Jussi Huotari asap. Based on these topics as well as the information in which sites/sessions each of you will attend we will make the final program for the Calotte Academy;

Third, we also ask you to make an abstract (about 250 – 300 words) of your presentation and send it with a short resume on you (name, professional title / position, affiliation, an e-mail address and telephone number) to us soon. Dead line for abstracts is 15^th of April. This information will be put together for a booklet and distributed for all the participants either just before, or in the beginning, of 2011 Academy.
